Lactate biosensors illuminate peripheral nerve

The authors demonstrate that glycogen is present in peripheral nerve, primarily in myelinating Schwann cells, and supports conduction in the large diameter, myelinated axon during periods of aglycemia. They used lactate biosensors to show that lactate is produced from the breakdown of glycogen in peripheral nerve and is passed to myelinated axons to support function during aglycemia.
